Description
A hysteroscope is a thin tube with a light on the end that can expand. Your doctor can pass surgical instruments through a hysteroscope. Your OBGYN, Dr. Mariz, can use the device either as a diagnostic tool — that is, to aid in an examination on the way to making a diagnosis — or as a functional tool to assist in a surgical procedure. Hysteroscopy refers to any process, diagnostic or practical, for which your doctor uses a hysteroscope.

While similar to a laparoscope, the hysteroscope’s design allows your doctor to use it inside your vagina and uterus. Laparoscopy is when your doctor is using a laparoscope to examine the outside of your uterus. Hysteroscopy is when your doctor uses a hysteroscope to examine the inside of your uterus. Dr. Mariz uses both devices simultaneously to get the complete picture of your uterus inside and outside.

Even with a speculum in place, it may have difficulty seeing past your cervix into your uterus. A lighted hysteroscope makes the process easier. The camera allows image lighting and magnification.

Reasons for a diagnostic hysteroscopy include:

Abnormal bleeding, especially after menopause An abnormal Pap smear result Uterine bleeding Trying to diagnose infertility causes Diagnosing pain symptoms
Your physician can use it to assist in other ob-gyn procedures, as well. For example, your doctor may simultaneously use a diagnostic hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. Or they can use it to ascertain the position of your uterus before a uterine suspension. Because it’s so versatile, the hysteroscope has become a commonly used tool in a doctor’s toolbox.

Do not wait any longer and make an appointment with Dr. Mariz by either calling our Union Square office at (212) 378-9985 or our Upper East Side NYC office at (212) 389-1904.
