A neuroma is a benign (noncancerous) growth of nerve tissue that can develop in various parts of the body. Morton’s neuroma causes a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot. Toes also may sting, burn or feel numb. When walking, it might feel as though there is a pebble in your shoe. People with certain foot deformities such as bunions, hammer toes, flat feet, or more flexible feet are at higher risk for developing a neuroma. Other potential causes are activities that involve repetitive irritation to the ball of the foot, such as running or court sports. An injury or other type of trauma to the area may also lead to a neuroma.
